Proper mattress care? Here are 7 tips to make sure you get it right!
It’s never too late to take care of your mattress, whether it’s a new purchase or a product you’ve been using for quite some time.
Proper mattress maintenance allows us to preserve its integrity over time and continue to give ourselves truly restorative rest!
1. Flip your mattress
One of the good habits for proper mattress maintenance is to flip your mattress upside down and rotate it head to toe every 3 to 4 months to allow the internal materials to settle evenly.
This applies to foam mattresses as well as classic or pocket spring mattresses. The “multi-handle design” makes rotating your mattresses easy, thanks to handy and strong side handles!
However, always check the label or information booklet you received with your mattress or ask your trusted retailer for advice. Yes, because nowadays, new technologies allow us to provide so-called “no-flip mattresses,” that is, mattresses that do not require rotation.
2. Choose a quality bed base
Mattresses should always be placed on quality bed bases with flexible and durable slats. In addition, the bed base should never be smaller in size than the mattress itself.
It’s essential to choose the suitable bed base for your mattress because an inappropriate bed base may ruin the mattress and not provide the most comfortable support during rest. In short, bed bases and mattresses should always be chosen as a pair.
3. Treat the mattress “gently”
Another often-overlooked family habit is playing and jumping on the bed. We are talking about children, of course! The pressure caused by jumping can damage not only the inner layers of the mattress but also the slats of the underlying bed base.
4. Don’t allow the mattress to get wet
Avoid liquids in contact with the mattress or cleaning it with steam appliances. Moist conditions promote the formation of dust mites, mold, and unpleasant odors.
Choose products suitable for your mattress and sanitize it responsibly to prevent its ruin and effectively eliminate mites and bacteria!
5. Air your mattress outdoors
Especially during spring and summer, expose your mattress to fresh air — and never direct sunlight, which can oxidize materials — to allow moisture dissipation and keep mites and bacteria away.
During winter, it will be just enough to leave the mattress free of blankets and sheets and with the cover open (if it has a zipper) for at least an hour inside the well-ventilated bedroom.
Another care to keep in mind for perfect mattress maintenance and preserving one’s health and physical well-being is to change the sheets, which should be done at least once a week.
6. Choose mattresses with removable covers
Mattresses with removable covers are convenient from a hygienic and functional point of view. Once the cover is removed, it can be machine or dry-cleaned. Mattresses with removable covers guarantee hygiene and protection against allergens and dust that unavoidably build up.
Did you know that Manifattura Falomo’s mattresses with removable covers are provided with an additional inner cover called Interlock, which allows you to continue using the mattress even while washing the outer cover?
