Why do the best ideas come while we sleep?
It’s all a matter of brain waves. When you’re awake your brain is dominated by “Beta waves”: at this stage your conscious mind is focused and guided on what you want to do.
While you’re awake your intelligence is at its highest, but not necessarily your creativity. So is it true that while we sleep we are more creative and therefore come up with the best ideas? Find out now in this article!
You relax, and the Alpha waves take over, thankfully!
When we relax, our brain goes into the Alpha wave mode and activates the “super learning” state. This particular phase promotes creativity and learning and makes them more easily accessible and manageable in this state.
After Alpha waves are Theta waves
“Theta waves” correspond to the state of sleep when we are in the REM phase or when we are in deep meditation. This is a highly creative state of mind that can influence the subconscious part of ourselves that is normally inaccessible to the conscious mind. Often, when you have a burst of inspiration, you also have spikes of Theta waves!
Wave progression and increased creativity
So with this logical progression of waves from Beta, Alpha and Theta, you may notice that as you approach or activate the Theta waves, that is, enter the REM state of sleep, your brain is clearly more creative.
On the shoulders of giants…
Thomas Edison, in the early 1900s had already realized that during the first stage of sleep his mind was more creative than when awake. In fact, he often slept sitting upright in his chair, his arm resting on his elbow and a handful of marbles in his hand. He would think about his problem until he fell asleep, and soon, when the marbles fell to the floor he would wake up and write down whatever was in his mind: creative solutions, new ideas or simply reminders.
Take a test!
Try taking a test, and don’t use marbles, just keep a mini-recorder by your bed so you can remember your ideas and dreams when you wake up during the night or before you fall asleep, and evaluate them with a fresh mind the next day! It is impressive how many things we don’t remember the next morning.
