Can’t sleep because of the summer heat? Follow these 7 tips!

Summer is finally here and who doesn’t love this time of year?! Unfortunately, though, the heat also brings some problems, especially at night! Restful sleep is essential for our health, but factors like the heat can often disrupt our rest.

If you happen to suffer from insomnia during the summer months or find it hard to get a good night’s sleep because of the heat, don’t miss this article and find out how to sleep well even in the summer!

Why do we have more trouble sleeping in the summer?

High temperatures and humidity aren’t the only causes of our sleepless nights. Other key factors may include:

  • Frequent changes of bed: hotels and vacation rentals don’t always have comfortable mattresses.
  • Changes in routine: even though vacation is synonymous with relaxation, for some of us, the shift in habits and schedules isn’t always easy. Plus, on vacation we tend to stay up later at night, thus disrupting our sleep-wake cycle.
  • More light: the increase in daylight hours also negatively affects our usual sleep-wake cycle.

So, what can we do to sleep more comfortably during those toasty summer nights?

Given the most common factors that can cause insomnia and discomfort on those hot summer nights, what steps can we take to make them more pleasant?

1. Air conditioning: turn it off before going to bed

If you have an air conditioner, it will certainly be a big help. But be careful! Setting the temperature too low in the bedroom comes with its own risks. The best thing to do is to turn it on a few hours before going to bed and then turn it off once it’s time to sleep.

2. Fan: don’t point it directly at yourself!

Who doesn’t have a fan at home these days? But even in this case, try not to overuse it. Feel free to leave it on in your bedroom, but don’t point it directly at your bed; instead, try to use it to create a breeze so that the room stays cooler.

3. Choose your fabrics carefully!

Wear only pure cotton or silk clothing. These are the coolest and best for proper breathability. The same goes for bed sheets, stick to pure cotton!

4. Which position is the coolest?

The coolest position is undoubtedly the “star” position lying on your back with your arms and legs spread out because it will make you sweat less.

5. Also diet plays an important role

Pay attention to what you eat and drink: food and beverages also affect our body temperature. For example, avoid overly spicy foods and alcoholic beverages, especially in the evening.

6. If you have a two-story house, then…

Head downstairs! It might not be an option for everyone, but if you live in a multi-story house, the ground floor is definitely the coolest. If you just can’t sleep one night because of the heat, sleeping on the living room couch might be just what you need!

7. And don’t forget to choose the right mattress!
